Fall Family Outfit Styling Guide: 2026 Refresh
Styling Your Family's Look For Family Photography
You booked the fall family photo session. You found a date that works around school, sports, work and everything else already filling the family calendar.
And then comes the question that can somehow feel harder than actually getting everyone to the session:
What in the world are we all going to wear?
If you're wondering what to wear for fall family photos, the good news is that you don't need to completely reinvent everyone's wardrobes. Some of my favorite fall family photo outfits start with pieces families already own and love, then add a few colors, textures or accessories that pull everyone together.
Whether you're planning a full family session, a fall mini session or including the whole family in maternity photos this autumn, the goal isn't to make everyone match. We're building a look that feels connected while still letting everyone look like themselves.
And fall gives us plenty to work with.

How to Choose Colors for Fall Family Photos
The Best Color Palettes for Fall Family Pictures
Fall in Indiana already brings a lot of color to your photographs. Depending on when and where we photograph, we might be working with deep green fields with pops of wildflowers, golden grasses, caramel-kissed lake side preserves or trees filled with oranges, reds and yellows.
Instead of trying to compete with all of that color, let nature do some of the work for you.
Neutrals are one of my favorite starting points for fall family photo outfits. Think of mixing creams, tans, warm browns, soft greys and/or black with rich jewel tones for a cozy autumn vibe.
This doesn't mean every person needs to wear the same two or three colors. In fact, please don't, lol.
Think of your family's wardrobe as one overall color palette instead, choose at least 3 colors to build the family's look around.
For instance: One person might wear a cream sweater. Someone else could wear an olive jacket. A child might have a patterned dress that includes both colors along with a deeper rust, burgundy or muted blue. Dad's shoes or belt might bring another warm brown into the mix.
When you look at everything together, the colors should feel like they belong in the same family without looking like everyone bought the same outfit in a different size.
The ultimate goal is for the outfits to compliment each other, not MATCH each other.

How to Coordinate Fall Family Photo Outfits
Start With One Outfit You Already Love
You do not have to shop for five completely new outfits just because you're having family photos taken.
In fact, one of the easiest ways to begin planning is to start with one piece you already know you want someone to wear.
Maybe Mom has a dress she feels amazing in. Maybe your daughter has a patterned dress you've been saving for fall. Maybe you already bought your toddler the cutest little pair of boots and you absolutely want them in the photos.
Start there.
Look at the colors and overall style of that first piece, then use it as your anchor for everyone else. If Mom's dress contains cream, rust and olive, for example, those colors can begin showing up in smaller ways throughout the rest of the family's clothing.
This approach works especially well for fall maternity photos, too. If you've already chosen a maternity dress you love, there's no reason to make your own outfit more complicated. Let that dress lead the color palette, then build your partner's and children's outfits around it.
You're coordinating—not matching.

Why Layers Work So Well for Fall Family Photos
Using Jackets, Vests and Sweaters Without Adding Bulk
Autumn means cooler weather. And cooler weather means, layers are KING.
A jacket, vest, cardigan or oversized plaid layer can completely change a simple outfit while also giving each person a chance to bring some of their own style into the family's overall look. It's a trick that works for parents, teenagers and toddlers alike.
Layers also add visual interest without requiring loud patterns or lots of different colors. A simple shirt and jeans can suddenly feel much more intentional when you add a textured jacket or vest.

They can also give us a little flexibility during your session. A jacket can stay on for part of the session and come off for another set of photographs, creating a slightly different look without anyone needing an actual outfit change.
Just keep comfort in mind, especially with little ones. We want layers that allow kids to move, cuddle, play and explore rather than something they're going to spend the entire session trying to pull off.

The Best Textures and Accessories for Fall Family Pictures
Using Shoes and Accessories to Show Personality
One of the easiest ways to make fall family photo outfits feel interesting without adding another pattern is through texture.
Cool-weather fabrics naturally work beautifully this time of year. Velvet, suede and leather can all add depth to an outfit, while boots, belts and other accessories can create that classic, cozy fall feeling without taking over the photograph.
This is also where I love letting everyone's personality sneak into the wardrobe.
Pay attention to the little things: each person's shoes, jewelry, belt, hat, scarf or other accessories. Those smaller pieces are a wonderful place to incorporate something someone genuinely loves during this particular season of life.
Maybe your daughter loves boots. Your toddler is adorable in a pom-pom hat. Your teenager has a jacket that feels very them. Mom loves a certain style of jewelry. Dad has a great pair of leather shoes...
Those details help individualize everyone's outfit while still keeping the overall family wardrobe cohesive.
They're also a great place to play with current trends. A trendy accessory is much easier to swap out over the years than building the entire family's wardrobe around one very specific fashion moment.
Because while trends are fun, we also want you to love these photographs long after the trend has moved on. Hello, 80s shoulder pads.

What Not to Wear for Fall Family Photos
Avoiding Logos and Trends That Can Date Your Pictures
There aren't many hard rules when I'm helping a family decide what to wear, because your photographs should still look and feel like your family.
There are, however, a few things worth thinking twice about.
Don't wear logos. Large words, graphics and recognizable logos tend to pull your eye directly toward the shirt instead of the people wearing it. We want to notice your faces and your family's connection first.

Avoid heavy handed trends: working your favorite trends into your look is a great idea, but stick to accessories and details. Don't have every single outfit be part of one major trend.
There's nothing wrong with wearing something current. In fact, those little fashion details can be part of what makes a photograph accurately represent this chapter of your family's life. The trick is balance.
Keep the larger pieces of your wardrobe relatively classic, then let shoes, jewelry, jackets and accessories carry some of the trendier elements. That gives your photographs personality without making the entire gallery feel tied to one very specific year.
Avoid the urge to make everyone match exactly. Five people in identical shirts might technically coordinate, but it doesn't give us nearly as much dimension or personality as a thoughtfully mixed wardrobe.

How to Coordinate Without Making Everyone Match
If you're staring at everyone's closets and still aren't sure how to put all of this together, try thinking about the family one person at a time.
Start with your anchor outfit. Often that's Mom's outfit, but it absolutely doesn't have to be. Choose whichever piece you're most excited about and build outward - or start with the pickiest dresser and we can style around them.
Next, pull three or four colors from that outfit that could appear elsewhere. They don't have to show up equally. One color might appear in Dad's shirt, another in a child's dress and another in someone's shoes.
Then look for texture & layers: Could someone be in knit? Another use suede? Sport a leather belt or boots? Add vest or soft jacket? Layers add not only warmth for fall but also texture and richness to any family's look.
Finally, add the little pieces that make everyone feel like themselves.
For children, especially, comfort matters just as much as appearance. If your toddler can't comfortably walk, sit, snuggle or explore in an outfit, we're probably going to spend more time thinking about the clothing than enjoying the session.
<p>The same goes for Mom. Choose something you feel comfortable moving in and, especially for a maternity session, something you feel good wearing. If you think your outfit only looks good it you stand a certain way and hold you're breath... that's not your look.
Outfits should help you settle in to the experience—not become another thing you have to manage.

Custom Family Styling Boards Make Outfit Planning Easier
Styling support is part of the experience I offer my Hashtag Memories families.
I have styling boards available to help you visualize complete family looks, and many of the boards you'll find throughout this guide are shoppable. Click a board you love and you'll be taken to the live version, where you can click individual items and shop directly.
But you don't have to start with one of my boards, either. If you already have an outfit you love, send me a picture!
Here's the part I really want moms to know:
you don't have to figure all of this out by yourself.
Seriously. That's enough to get us started.
Maybe you bought your dress months ago. Maybe your little girl has something hanging in her closet that you know she needs to wear. Maybe you have the perfect sweater but have absolutely no idea what your husband and kids should wear with it.
Send me a picture or link to that piece and I can create a custom styling board for your family built around the item you already love.
Because getting everyone dressed shouldn't be the part of family photos that makes you want to cancel family photos.

My job isn't only to photograph your family once you arrive. I can help you plan the pieces beforehand, too, so when your session evening arrives, you can spend less time wondering whether everyone's clothes work together and more time simply being with your people.

Planning Fall Family Photos in Hamilton County, Indiana
Outfit Ideas for Noblesville, Westfield and Carmel Fall Photos
Fall family photography in Hamilton County gives us so many different backdrops to work with, and your session location can help guide your final wardrobe choices.
A natural field around Noblesville or Westfield might pair beautifully with warm neutrals, earthy greens, denim, boots and textured layers. A location with more formal gardens or architecture around Carmel can handle a slightly dressier wardrobe while still incorporating those same autumn colors and fabrics. And the season itself changes as we move through fall.
Early fall can still be warm enough for lighter fabrics with a jacket or cardigan added for texture. As we move deeper into autumn, richer fabrics, boots, knits and true cold-weather accessories begin to feel right at home.
That's one reason I don't believe there is one perfect formula for what to wear for fall family photos. Your family's personalities, the location, the weather and even where we are in the season can all help shape the final look.

If you're planning fall family photos, a maternity session or a fall mini session around Noblesville, Westfield, Carmel, Cicero or the surrounding Hamilton County area, we'll work through those details together.
Start with something you love. Add colors that complement the season. Bring in layers and texture. Let the little details show everyone's personalities.
And if you get stuck somewhere between Mom's dress and figuring out what everyone else should wear?
Send me the picture. We'll build from there.
Fall sessions with Hashtag Memories are designed to feel like time together first and photographs second—and making the planning process easier is part of that experience.
