Fall Family Mini Session

Fall Family Mini Session Near Noblesville Indiana

Sometimes a new photography inquiry comes with a little surprise.

When Katie, a mom of 5 - reached out about a family mini session, I noticed her last name immediately. It was the same last name of one best friends from High School! And I mean it's a unique last name: LaPaglia. I thought hmmm, I wonder if she married one of my friends brothers (he had a lot of them back in the day)

So before we got too far into planning, I had to ask:

Hey momma, so great to meet you! Random question — do you know this guy with a similar name?

And guess what? She did!

She. Was. His. WIFE.

Not only did she know him, but they are married! And together over the past several years, they've built a family of five beautiful children!

It was such a fun connection to discover before we had even met in person, and it made this fall family mini session at Koteewi feel like one of those small-world moments that you don't always see coming. (Also Jason as a dad... what????!!! He probably things the same, "Chelsea as a homeschool Mom...what???!!!!")

Are Family Mini Sessions a Good Option for Families With Multiple Children?

With five children, you might assume a family photography session needs to be long in order to capture everyone. Although more time can be helpful and let's us dive in deeper to each family member's connection - it doesn't always have to be a full session to make a beautiful gallery!

A mini session can be a wonderful fit for a larger family when the goal is to keep things moving, make the most of a beautiful location, and capture both the whole family and the individual relationships happening within it.

That doesn't mean every child has to stand still and smile at the same time though... and actually, I would argue the opposite.

When there are five kids in one family, there is always plenty of personalities to know and capture. Each kiddo often has there own different energy levels, different comfort levels, different senses of humor and sometimes one child who would really rather watch (especially the younger ones) everything from the sidelines for a few minutes.

That is completely okay.

My job isn't to make five children behave exactly the same way for twenty minutes.

It's to create enough opportunities for them to relax, interact, play, and connect so we can capture what this family feels like right now.

Family Photos at Koteewi Park Near Noblesville Indiana

What Makes Koteewi Lake a Good Location for Fall Family Photos?

Koteewi is one of those locations that gives a family session more than one backdrop without requiring a complicated itinerary.

There is the lake, open space, trails, and plenty of natural texture. For this particular session, the wildflowers were especially beautiful, giving us a softer seasonal setting while still feeling very natural.

For this session, the timing was technically late summer moving toward early fall, which is one of those beautiful little transition windows for outdoor family photography in Indiana.

You can start getting that early-fall feeling without necessarily waiting for peak fall color. Fields, wildflowers, grasses, and lakeside scenery can create beautiful family photographs long before the trees turn completely.

This evening was also very overcast and humid. It had been just a week or so since the major flooding that affected parts of Indiana in late summer, so the weather certainly had a different feel than the crisp, golden fall evenings many people picture when they think about fall family photos.

But that is part of photographing families outdoors...

We work with the season we're actually in.

And honestly, the soft overcast sky gave us beautiful, even light that worked wonderfully with the setting.

Helping Kids Feel Comfortable During Family Photos

What Can You Do When a Child Is Shy During a Family Photography Session?

One of the sweetest parts of this session was watching one of the little guys go from unsure to completely involved. When we first started, their youngest was a little stand-off'ish. He wasn't quite ready to jump into the action, and that was perfectly fine.

There was no reason to force it.

Mom gave him some snuggles, we gave him a little time to take everything in, and eventually we introduced one of the easiest ways to get kids moving during a family session: Red Light, Green Light. Then, suddenly, he had a game to play and once he was playing, he wasn't thinking about the camera anymore.

That is one of the reasons I love incorporating games and movement into family photography, especially with younger children. Instead of asking a child to "smile for the camera," we can give them something fun to actually do.

Sometimes that means running.

Sometimes it means chasing a sibling.

Sometimes it means getting a big hug from Mom.

And sometimes it means a completely unexpected game of Red Light, Green Light in the middle of a field. Those moments can tell us much more about a child than a perfectly posed smile ever could.

What to Expect From a Fall Family Mini Session

How Much Variety Can You Get From a Short Family Photography Session?

A family mini session is short, but that doesn't mean the resulting gallery has to feel repetitive. We can use the location to create variety while keeping the family together.

Walking, sitting, snuggling, playing, laughing, and simply moving from one spot to another can all create different kinds of photographs.

For this family, we had five siblings interacting with one another, parents connecting with their kids, individual personalities emerging, and plenty of opportunities for the whole family to come together. And because the session was outdoors at Koteewi, the surroundings became part of the story too - like the boys chasing crickets or finding woolyworms and grasshoppers.

The wildflowers weren't just a backdrop.

The lake wasn't just a backdrop.

The open space gave the kids somewhere to move, gave the family room to interact, and helped the photographs feel like they belonged to this particular evening.

That is one of the things I love about a well-planned mini session. We don't need to squeeze every possible pose into a short amount of time. We just need to use those minutes intentionally. Fall Family Mini Session Near Noblesville Indiana

Why Fall Family Photos Are About More Than Perfect Smiles

How Play and Connection Create Natural Family Photos

Looking back at a family gallery years from now, I don't think most parents are going to remember whether every child gave the camera their biggest smile.

They're going to remember the way their kids looked together.

The little personalities that were already starting to emerge.

The way Mom pulled a hesitant little one close.

The games that made everyone laugh.

The fact that there were five children standing beside them, each completely themselves.

That is what I want family photography to hold onto.

Not a perfectly controlled version of your family, but a little piece of the family you actually have right now.

This family happened to come to their session with five beautiful children, a connection to someone from my own past, a humid Indiana evening, wildflowers, a lake, and one very important game of Red Light, Green Light.

I'm pretty sure that is a much more interesting story than five perfectly posed smiles ever could have been.
