Helpful Guide for Expecting Mommas Wanting Baby Photography
If you've been Googling when to book newborn photos, there's a good chance you're somewhere in the middle of preparing for a baby and wondering how far ahead you're actually supposed to plan.
Maybe you just found out you're pregnant.
Maybe you're already well into your second trimester.
Maybe you're in your third trimester and suddenly realizing there are approximately 900 things you still want to do before baby arrives.
Or maybe your baby is already home and you're thinking, Wait...did I already miss my chance?"
Here's the answer I want you to hear first: with lifestyle newborn photography, there really isn't a too-early or too-late time to reach out.
Earlier is helpful if you want to plan ahead.
But if your baby is already here, please don't assume you've missed the opportunity to capture these first days together.

There are certainly advantages to planning ahead, especially if you have your heart set on a particular photographer or want to include maternity photos too. But newborn photography doesn't have to come with the pressure of hitting one very specific window.
And honestly? If your heart is telling you that you want to remember this little season, it's worth asking.

When to Book Newborn Photos
The answer is earlier if you want more planning options, but there
is no magic booking deadline
When it comes to when to book newborn photos, I generally recommend reaching out once you know you'd like to have them done.
That doesn't mean you need to have your nursery finished, know exactly what everyone will wear, or have every detail figured out.

It simply gives you more time to talk through what you're hoping for and find a date that works.
If you're still early in pregnancy, you can start researching photographers and getting a feel for different styles (learn more about it here).
During the second trimester, you may feel like you have a little more breathing room to make plans. Even during the third trimester, it is absolutely worth reaching out.
And if baby has already arrived? Please don't assume you've waited too long.
With lifestyle newborn photography, the goal isn't to squeeze your baby into a very specific version of "newborn." It's to document your family during this season of becoming, growing, adjusting and loving this new little person.

Is It Too Early to Book Newborn Photos?
You can start planning before you know exactly when baby will arrive
If you're looking at newborn photographers early in your pregnancy, don't worry, you're not jumping the gun.
In fact, early planning can make the whole experience feel much more relaxed. You have time to ask questions, look through galleries, decide what kind of photography feels like you and think about whether you'd like to include maternity or milestone photos as well.

You also don't need to know the exact day your baby will arrive to start the conversation. Knowing simply what month they are thinking you'll be due is a great starting point!
After all, babies are famously not great at following calendars and getting the memo when it comes to their "due dates" anyways. lol.

Your photographer can help you plan around your estimated due date while understanding that the actual date will depend on when your little one decides to make an appearance - as it should be.

Is It Too Late to Book Newborn Photos?
Pregnancy is not the only time to reach out...
This is the question I especially want new moms to hear the answer to:
If baby has already arrived, no, it may not be too late.
If your baby is already here and you're suddenly thinking, "Wait... I really want pictures of this," - Sis - reach out.
Maybe you were overwhelmed during pregnancy. Maybe you weren't sure whether newborn photography was something you ACTUALLY wanted - but now they are hear your heart is set on them.
Maybe life simply got busy once baby arrived and even though you're entirely sleep deprived you realize - HEY - I NEED TO SAVE THESE MOMENTS!
That's all totally ok and totally normal. Birth looks like a million different ways for a million different Mommas. So let's find what works for you, instead of worrying about what "should be."

With an in-home lifestyle session, there isn't a hard requirement that your baby be photographed within the first couple of weeks. I want to photograph your family as you actually are in this season.
And if I don't have availability - I bet I know another photographer who might.
As mommas, we don't get this time back. If your heart is whispering that you want to keep these little moments for always, please reach out.

Why Lifestyle Newborn Photography Changes the Timing Question
Lifestyle Newborn Sessions Are About Connection & Life's Beautiful Moments
You may have heard that newborn photos have to happen within the first two weeks.
That's often associated with posed newborn photography, where babies are photographed in specific sleepy poses. These are GEORGOUS images and I used to shoot them regularly as well. But...
Lifestyle newborn photography just works differently.
Which is why I personally love it so much!
Instead of making the session about getting baby into a particular pose, the focus is on the relationships happening naturally around your new baby.

Mom holding baby.
Dad looking down at tiny fingers.
A big brother or sister curiously looking into the crib wondering who that new little one is
Snuggling up on the bed together.
Rocking baby in a silent nursery as white noise fills the air...
Those quiet moments when everyone is still figuring out what life looks like now.
That's what makes lifestyle newborn photography so meaningful (at least to me anyways).
It gives us room to slow down and photograph the relationships that are already there instead of asking your family to become something you're not.

What If Baby Is Already Here?
You may still have plenty of time to document this Season
If your baby is already home, you don't need to panic about whether you've missed some magical newborn-photo deadline.
There isn't one.
Newborns change quickly, of course. Around the first couple of months, you'll start noticing more alertness, more interaction and new milestones. Somewhere around three or four months, your baby's personality and developmental stage can begin to feel very different from those first newborn days.
But that doesn't mean there is suddenly a date when newborn photography stops being meaningful.
Your baby will never be this exact age again.

If your baby is sleepy, wonderful.
If your baby is wide awake and looking around, wonderful.
If your baby needs to be fed, changed, swaddled or held for a while, that's simply part of the story.
The beauty of lifestyle photography is that we have flexibility to follow your baby instead of forcing your baby to follow the session.

Should You Book Newborn Photos in the First Two Weeks?
The ideal timing depends on the kind of newborn photography you want
If you specifically want very sleepy, posed newborn images, you'll likely want to discuss timing with your photographer well before your due date because that style often relies more heavily on those early newborn days.
But if you're looking for in home lifestyle newborn photography, the first 14 days is great, BUT it can offer A LOT MORE flexibility then that too!

Here at Hashtag Memories Photography, my in-home lifestyle newborn sessions are designed around your family and your baby rather than a strict posing schedule. I bring simple pieces like beautiful knit wraps, headbands and sleepy hats for us to use - when they make sense, but the heart of the session is the new connection forming between you all.
That means there isn't one perfect day that you have to hit. It's simply about capturing this season of life where things are changing and a little one is welcomed home.

What If You Are Adding a Baby to Your Family?
Newborn Lifestyle Sessions are GREAT for families with toddlers and preschoolers siblings
If this isn't your first baby, you may have an entirely different question running through your head:

How on earth are we supposed to get everyone ready and out the door for photos? I get it.
Especially when your older child is a toddler or preschooler, "everyone sit still and smile" isn't exactly a realistic family activity.

That's one of the reasons I love photographing newborn families at home. Your toddler can wiggle. Your preschooler can show me their room. Someone can grab a snack every 5 seconds if they need to. Baby can be fed, changed, soothed, etc
I've photographed the very real version of family life where a sibling needs a little distraction to stay interested, where kids wander in and out of the room, and where the sweetest photographs happen somewhere between the moments we thought we were going to photograph.

We still grab the beautiful formal shot - but the beautiful candids along the way too!
That is real life.
And that's exactly what I want to help you preserve. The calm, the chaos, the sticky fingers, the love. Because those are the things that make life and our memories of our children's childhoods, so DANG sweet!

When Should You Book Maternity and Newborn Photography?
Booking earlier gives you more opportunities, but isn't required
If you're hoping to photograph both your pregnancy and your newborn season, earlier planning can give you more flexibility.
Maternity photos are often scheduled during the mid to later part of pregnancy, while newborn photos happen after baby arrives. Planning both ahead of time means you can think about how you'd like the two seasons to fit together.
But maternity photography is never a requirement, around these parts, for newborn photography.

You can book a newborn session without having maternity photos taken. You can book maternity photos and decide later that you want newborn photos. Or you can simply decide that newborn photos are what matter most to you - and that's okay too!
Yet still, sometimes Mommas can't believe how fast their little one is growing so opt for adding milestone sessions to the mix. Trust me when I say momma, there is no WRONG way to do it.
Your family decisions don't have to follow a SPECIFIC timeline just because someone else did.

Finding a Newborn Photographer in Hamilton County
Serving families in Noblesville, Westfield, Carmel, Fishers and Cicero
If you're searching for a newborn photographer in Hamilton County, you may be comparing photographers from all over Central Indiana.
One of the most important things to consider isn't just the finished photographs. It's whether the photographer's approach feels comfortable for your family.
For me, that means photographing newborns in the place where they already feel safe and comfortable: home.
I work with families throughout Noblesville, Westfield, Carmel, Fishers, Cicero and surrounding Central Indiana communities.
My goal isn't to make your home look like a photography studio or your family act like models... sure I'll help edit out clutter or move a thing here or there -- provide you with helpful techniques and tips, but... I want it to look and FEEL like YOUR FAMILY. Not a studio session.

The baby who needs to be held.
The toddler who won't stop moving.
The mom who is still figuring out how to hold everything together...
The dad who is completely in love with this tiny person - but scared of how big his hands are.
The sibling who is suddenly learning what it means to be a big brother or sister. Those are the pieces of this season that you may want to remember years from now.

What Should You Do If You Are Still Unsure?
Start with a conversation instead of waiting for the perfect time
If you're still wondering when to book newborn photos, here's my simplest advice:
Reach out.
You don't have to know exactly what you want yet.
You don't have to have your due date perfectly planned.

You don't have to have a perfect nursery, HGTV house or know what everyone will wear.
And you definitely don't have to worry that you've waited too long before asking.
We can talk about what you're hoping to remember, what your family looks like right now and whether lifestyle newborn photography feels like the right fit for you.
Maybe I'll have the perfect opening for your family. Or maybe I won't have availability and can help point you toward another photographer.

Either way, asking is better than wondering, because this little season is going to change before you know it.
If your heart is whispering that you want to keep these moments for always, that's reason enough to start a conversation.
