Carmel Family Welcomes Home New Baby Girl
In Home Lifestyle Newborn Photography Session
Walking into the Meier family's Carmel home for their newborn session came with a pretty amazing surprise: everywhere I looked, pieces of their family's history were already hanging on the walls.
Photographs from sessions we've shared over the years had made their way into gallery walls throughout their home. Images that I remembered delivering through a computer screen were now surrounded by toys, busy family life, growing kiddos and all the everyday moments that happened after I clicked the shutter.
And now there was someone brand new to add to those walls.
Just a short time after photographing Kyra and her family among the summer wildflowers for their maternity session, I joined them at home in Carmel, Indiana to officially document their newest little girl.

In-Home Newborn Photography in Carmel, Indiana
What an In-Home Lifestyle Newborn Photography Session Looks Like
An in home newborn session tells a very different piece of the story than maternity photography. Although you can catch this beautiful family's maternity session here.
Instead of documenting all that anticipation before baby's arrival, we're photographing what happens once she's actually here: where she sleeps, who reaches for her, how everyone is adjusting and all those tiny details that suddenly belong to your everyday life.
There is no need to pack the diaper bag, load everyone into the car or worry about getting a newborn out the door on time. I come to you, and we use the spaces where your family is already settling into its newest routine.
For the Meier family, that meant photographing their new daughter right where so much of her childhood will begin—their Carmel home.

Why Your Baby's Nursery Is Perfect for Newborn Photos
How to Use Nursery Details in Lifestyle Newborn Photography
I need an entire moment for this nursery because Kyra absolutely nailed it.
The theme was sweet Beatrix Potter style Geese, complete with pink accents and all the adorable details you could possibly want. It was playful, sweet and completely perfect for their newest little girl.
It could easily been swayed towards a "Silly Goose" or "Mother Goose" theme as well. It was all pink gingham, little girl vibes that was understated and utterly beautiful!

Even better, parts of the room had another story tucked inside them.
Several pieces came from big brother Will's original nursery—the same nursery I was fortunate enough to photograph years ago when the Meier family first brought him home.
That's one of my favorite things about photographing newborn sessions at home.
The room isn't simply a pretty backdrop. The crib, artwork, stuffed animals and little details parents spent months choosing become part of the photographs too.
Years from now, those details may be changed, handed down or packed away. In these images, they get to stay exactly as they were when baby first came home.

Newborn Photography With Older Siblings at Home
Why In-Home Newborn Sessions Work Well With Big Brothers and Sisters
I've been photographing Will since before he was born, which made seeing him step into his newest role especially fun. The little baby whose nursery I once photographed is now the big kid welcoming a sister into the same family!

In-home newborn photography works especially well when there are older siblings because they don't have to spend the entire session focused on the camera. They're already surrounded by familiar toys, favorite places and all the comforts of home.
For example, while I was working wtih sthi sweet baby girl and her momma, big brother Will was playing hockey in the hallway working on his goal shots with Dad -lol.
And that's part of what makes these sessions so graet! We can bring them into photographs when they're ready, give them space when they need it, and let their relationship with the new baby unfold without asking them to suddenly behave like tiny professional models.
For families adding another child, those sibling photographs can become some of the most meaningful images in the entire newborn gallery.

Including Dogs in Your Newborn Photography Session
How Pets Can Be Included in In-Home Newborn Photos
Of course, this wasn't only a family of humans waiting to meet the newest Meier. The pups needed their turn too.
If you've been around a while and saw little Will's nursery session, you might remember that his nursery theme was based off of big brother Blue's Golden Retriever vibes (literally... like Blue IS a Golden Retriever). And it was adorable!

Including Blue was important when Will came home, and it was important again for his little sister's session - and this time there was even more love to add to the mix as they had added a new furbaby to the ranks!
That's another perk of photographing newborns at home: your pets are already there.
Depending on their personalities and comfort level, we can work them into a few family photographs without transporting them somewhere unfamiliar or trying to coordinate an extra adult to attend the sesison with us to hold on to them when they aren't in the frame.
They're part of the family, and for families who love their dogs as much as the Meiers do, leaving them completely out of this chapter simply wouldn't tell the whole story.

Booking Maternity and Newborn Photography Together
Why Maternity and Newborn Photos Tell Different Parts of Your Baby's Story
Only a short time separated this newborn session from the Meier family's summer maternity photo shoot, but the two galleries feel completely different.
The maternity session was outdoors among wildflowers at sunset. It was about waiting, wondering and celebrating their last stretch of time before their family changed again.

The newborn session brought us home.
Now baby was in their arms. Will was officially a big brother. The pups had a new tiny human to investigate. The Silly Goose nursery was no longer waiting for its occupant.
For expecting families considering both maternity and newborn photography, that's why I love the combination. The sessions aren't duplicates of one another.
One documents the anticipation; the other documents what we'd been waiting for all along. The bringing home of baby.

Choosing a Carmel Indiana Newborn Photographer
What to Look for When Booking In-Home Newborn Photography
If you're searching for a Carmel Indiana newborn photographer, think about more than what you want your baby's newborn portraits to look like.
Think about what you want them to feel like too! Not just now, but in 20 years when they're out of the house and you look back on your memories together.

An in-home lifestyle session can include the nursery you carefully planned, baby's first home, older siblings, pets and the ordinary spaces that are about to become the setting for thousands of family memories.
You don't need to create a perfect house for your photographer. You need a home where your family is living this story right now.

For me, seeing years of Meier family photographs already hanging throughout their home was the perfect reminder of why that matters.
Those images aren't sitting forgotten in an online gallery. They're living alongside this family as the kids grow and new chapters are added. And that's SO humbling, y'all!
Kyra and family, thank you for trusting me with another one. From photographing Will before he arrived to walking into your home years later and meeting his baby sister, it has been such a joy to keep adding photographs to your family's story.
And I'm pretty sure your walls are going to need a little more room. 💛
