A family mini session is exactly what it sounds like: a shorter version of a traditional family photography session.
At Hashtag Memories, mini family photography sessions include:
a no-screens mini adventure family night outside
20 minutes of photography
A large viewing gallery
10x digital images for download and print release
1:1 outfit styling assistance by yours truly
And yes, twenty minutes may sound quick, but that's part of the appeal.
We're not trying to spend an entire evening creating hundreds of different photographs. Instead, we're using our time intentionally to create a beautiful update of your family as they are right now.
And that doesn't mean spending 20 minutes standing in one place and telling everyone to smile at the camera either. Heck, no! This is a mini adventure, that means exploring the area around us, getting giggles out of the kids, squishing in together and so much more!
We move. We explore. We get the traditional portraits Grandma will love, but we also make room for laughter, movement and the little moments in between.
It's just enough time to update what's hanging on your walls while locking in a little piece of what this season of your family's life feels like.

This is one of the questions moms understandably have when they're considering a family mini session.
Is 20 minutes really enough?
For many families, absolutely it is.
In fact, sometimes having less time works in our favor...
For some mommas it's less stressful to know their toddler will only be apart of a session for just 20 minutes. Other mommas though may prefer the idea of longer time, meaning a bigger net of images to choose from.
A teenager who agreed to family photos because Mom asked nicely may not want an entire evening devoted to them, either - or may not have time for more then a quick session due to demands from sports, jobs, homework, etc.
So time is totally a comfort thing.

When we first meet, one of my priorities (for a mini session or a full on family session) is breaking the ice with your kids.
They don't know me yet, they don't necessarily know what they're supposed to do, and suddenly there's a lady with a camera asking their family to hang out together.
That's a lot to expect a child to immediately understand. đź’›
If Mom has already warned me that someone is shy, that's okay too. I don't expect that child to instantly turn on a smile because the session clock started.
But you know what helps break the ice with kiddos and get them feeling comfortable quickly? Getting to chat away about whatever they are PASSIONATE about. Maybe it's recess time. Or a sport they love. Their favorite tv show... or how their brother has been driving them crazy all dang day. lol. I my experience, finding their passion will always fuel kiddo chatter!
I'll begin working to warm them up. We'll talk about things they like. I'll learn a little bit about them. We'll start moving and exploring rather than immediately demanding a perfect portrait.
Pretty soon, we're on a little adventure together.
That's when I can start creating a mixture of beautiful family portraits and fun candid photographs that show off everyone's individual personalities.

Why Minis Work for Busy Families and Busy Seasons of Life
One of the reasons I love offering family mini sessions is that they can make sense during so many different stages of parenthood. 🫶
If you're raising toddlers, a shorter session can mean getting the family photographs you want without asking little ones to stay engaged for a long period of time.
If your kids are bigger or you've entered the tween and teen years, a mini can be an easy way to update the family photo without making it feel like a huge event.
And if your family calendar is packed with practices, games, school events, work schedules and everything else that seems to arrive at the same time each fall, 20 minutes can simply feel doable.

All the sports. School Fees. The List Goes On and On...
Back-to-school shopping happened approximately five minutes ago. Sports and extracurricular expenses are rolling in. The holidays aren't all that far behind.

There's an assumption about photography mini sessions that I'd love to clear up too.
When you hear the word "mini," you might picture one specific Saturday, one location and families scheduled back-to-back all day long.
That's not how most of my family mini sessions work. đź’›
Rather than requiring every family to fit into one predetermined mini-session date, I generally work individually with each family to find a date and time that fits comfortably into their schedule.
Except for at Christmas, our mini sessions also aren't built around a photography set, which allows me to offer the most flexibility on location, dates and times.
So typically, we're headed somewhere beautiful and photographing your family in an outdoor location, just like we would for a traditional family session. The experience is simply shorter.
That gives us the opportunity to đź’› choose đź’› a setting that makes sense for the season and your family's style.

Both mini sessions and longer family sessions have the same basic goals: documenting this season of life your family is in. Their personalities. Their quirks. The CONNECTIONS and how THIS STAGE of life FEELS.
The biggest difference is simply how much time we get to spend together shooting and how large of a finished gallery you'll have from the experience.
A mini gives us 20 intentional minutes together đź’› and includes the downloading of 10x fully edited, finished images. It's wonderful when you want an updated family gallery, have a busy schedule, prefer a shorter experience or want to keep the investment smaller.
A longer family session gives us more relaxed time together. A larger overall gallery and more images included for download.
We settle into the experience without the same time limitations, spend more time exploring and creating different combinations, and ultimately build a larger finished gallery with more images included for download.
Neither experience needs to be considered the "better" version of family photography.
They're simply different ways of documenting your family depending on what feels right for you right now.
