And somewhere in the middle of trying to give our children the perfect childhood, many of us accidentally forget something incredibly simple:
Sometimes the best memories are made sitting shoulder to shoulder on the couch with a good book.
I don't know if my daughter will remember every long weekend vacation we've taken or every trip to the pool. She probably won't remember what we had for dinner on a random Tuesday in June (even if she loved it) or which toy she begged for that summer.
But I have a feeling she'll remember climbing into bed while the ceiling fan hummed overhead, cool sheets surround her little tired body and she's asking for "just one more chapter" before we turn out the light and she settles in to sleep.
Those are the memories I hope never leave her.

Reading Together Creates Some of Childhood's Greatest Memories
Books have a funny way of slowing time...
When we read together, there are no notifications buzzing, no scores to keep, no race to the next event. For twenty minutes, the world gets a little quieter. Bodies become relaxed and true quality time can happen.
Children begin imagining instead of scrolling.
Parents begin listening instead of multitasking (I'm SOOO GUILT OF THIS MYSELF!)
And somehow those ordinary evenings become the stories families tell years later.

Here's a little bonus idea for making even more memories. Many of these chapter books have movie adaptations. Instead of spending forty-five minutes scrolling through streaming services trying to agree on something, celebrate finishing a book with popcorn and a family movie night.
Reading the story first creates excitement, conversation, and anticipation. Then watching the movie becomes its own tradition.

Visit your local library or (even better) use their ONLINE CATALOG to find and reserve the book you want, then just swing by and pick it up. Easy. In and Out. And you might even be able to grab yourself a coffee ALONE along the way...

If you've been feeling pressure to create the perfect summer, I hope this reminds you that childhood isn't built on perfection.

Years from now, your children probably won't remember every screen they watched.
But they may remember curling up beside you while you read together.
And if there's one thing I've learned—as both a mom and someone who spends her days preserving family memories—it's that the ordinary moments often become the extraordinary ones.
So here's your permission to slow down. Go to the library. Check out a stack of books.
Read outside under a tree with sticky popsicles or in cold bedtime sheets. Stay up ten minutes past bedtime. The laundry can wait. Childhood won't.
