Fall Family Photo Outfits: Styling Tips

Styling your family for fall photos shouldn't be complicated With a few simple choices—layering, a neutral color base, and textures that love the camera—you can create a cohesive look for your fall family photo outfits that feels timeless and true to you.

Color Palettes That Always Work For Fall

When developing outfits, start with a neutral base like: greys, beiges, blues or greens. I know lots of people think only black, white and beige can be neutrals but that's NOT the case.

Almost any color can act as a "neutral" if you pick MULTIPLE SHADES within that color. For example: if you pick Blue as your base you could mix up the shades of: jean blue, light blue, a grey-blue and navy. When working together, these colors create HARMONY which makes things FEEL like a NEUTRAL.

For a good mix of color and a little flare, I also like to add a contrasting shade in a brown/tan/black or beige hue.

For Example: if you love BLUES the swatch below could be a good fit. You'll notice on it, instead of it just have one "blue" - there are 3 different SHADES of BLUE as well as 2 SHADES of BROWN to compliment it. You can then take these shades and build outfits around them, like I did below.

Some of my personal favorite colors to use for fall include blues, greens and beige/tans as the contrast SUPER WELL with all the colorful fall foliage.

Outfit Tips for Fall Family Photo Outfits

Adding Warmth & Outfit Accessory for Fall Family Photos in Carmel, Indiana

Family by a lake: a man with two children, a woman and a child seated, another child in a red dress. Warm tones and a peaceful setting.

Fall weather can swing from warm sun to crisp breeze in an hour, so when it comes to fall family photos, layering is a mom's best friend! It can add personality, style, warmth and so much more to EVERYONE's look. When looking to add a finishing touch to each outfit consider:

  •  Jewelry: Layered necklaces, simple hoops, and stacked bracelets are my favorite

  •  Warmth: Fleece lined tights, scarfs, fingerless gloves, fitted puff vests or cute beanie hats are great! Cardigans and structured jackets & shawls also work well here.

  • Shoes: a great way to show off personality (esp for tweens & teens) or opt for boots for warmth

Comfort Counts—Especially for Kids & Teens

During sessions together, we walk, snuggle, spin, and play. Make sure outfits are comfortable. That they can bend, stretch, and breathe. Avoid stiff fabrics or anything scratchy—happy, comfy kids photograph best!
