Carmel Family Meets Me In Westfield's Wildflower Fields
Family photos look a little different when your kiddo is taller then you are.
There may be fewer tiny hands to hold and no toddler to chase through the field, but there are new things worth remembering—the sports they're passionate about, the conversations they're starting to have with you, their growing independence and that personality that's becoming more and more their own.
Rhiannon and her son, Kai, joined me in the wildflower fields of Westfield, Indiana for a summer mini session that was just the two of them.
Kai started our evening a little on the quiet side, but it didn't take long before we were talking football, soccer, Momma's tattoos and everything in between.
Soon enough, he and Rhiannon were laughing together, and I got to photograph something special.

Are Mini Sessions Good for Families With Tweens and Teens?
Absolutely—and this session is a pretty perfect example of why.
A family mini doesn't have to mean two parents, several little kids and everyone squeezing together for one big family portrait.
For families with tweens and teens, a shorter photography session can actually be a great fit between football practice and dance rehersal.
We have enough time to create updated portraits without asking an older kid to spend an entire evening doing something that may not have been their idea in the first place.
We can keep moving, keep talking and make the experience feel casual rather than turning it into a "long production".
For Rhiannon and Kai, that gave us time for the photographs Momma wanted while still keeping the evening easy for a 12-year-old.

Life gets busy.
They head to school, start sports, make their own friends and develop schedules that somehow seem just as busy as ours.
The camera roll may still be full of them, but Mom is often standing behind the phone instead of appearing in the pictures. [Girl - you know who you are -- and yes, it's me too!]
A mom-and-son photography session creates something different...
It's not only an updated portrait of your child at 12. It's a photograph of who the two of you are together. Locked away from the forgetfulness of time.
Because as we already know, our relationships with our kiddos is different at every age, and them growing up isn't going to slow that down, it's going to speed it up.

Why Wildflower Fields Work for Relaxed Family Photography
Westfield's summer wildflower fields gave us exactly the kind of setting Momma wanted for this session.
Instead of a formal backdrop that asked Kai and Rhiannon to stay in one place, the open field gave us room to move around and create photographs while we talked and explored the grounds together.
Wildflowers add color and texture without making the finished images feel overly styled, and summer evenings give us the chance to work with that soft, warm light that looks beautiful against all the green Indiana puts on display this time of year.
For families who want photographs that feel casual, outdoorsy and easy, it's one of my favorite summer combinations.

How to Make Family Pictures Feel Natural for Tweens
Not every kid walks into a photography session ready to "perform" for a stranger with a camera—and I don't need them to.
Mom told me beforehand that Kai was a little quieter - so I knew going in, my goal would be to win him over and tell me about the things he was passionate about! And it didn't take long at all... I mean the FIFA World Cup was going on and this kiddo is a Soccer fan! Jackpot!
I also earned that he was starting football in Carmel soon. We talked about Momma's tattoos. We laughed. He and his mom interacted with each other, and the camera gradually became much less important - less and less noticed.
That's often where the good stuff starts.
Especially with older kids, I want to give them a chance to settle into the experience rather than asking them to become someone they're not for the sake of a photograph.
What Happens During a Family Mini Photography Session?
Can You Get Enough Variety From a Short Family Photo Session?
A mini session may be shorter than a full family photography experience, but that doesn't mean every image needs to look the same.
We can create portraits looking toward the camera, photographs with movement, close-up connections, individual images and plenty of candid moments in between.
With only two people in front of the camera, we can also spend less time organizing a large group and more time concentrating on the relationship I'm there to photograph.
For parents who simply want to update the photographs on their walls or document a particular stage with their child, a mini can be exactly enough.
